History of the Tournament:
The Miriam Foundation Herring & Schnapps Golf Tournament is North America's first and finest charitable golf tournament.
In the fall of 1961, Lou Shoore and Oscar Soiferman made a bet that would impact the lives of hundreds of people with intellectual disabilities.
During their usually friendly game of golf, the two had a heated argument about whose wife - Rhoda Shoore or Vera Soiferman - made the best herring. To choose a winner, each man brought a hefty sample of his wife's best effort to Hillsdale Golf and Country Club. That year Saul Levenson and Paul Waxman, the other half of the golfers' foursome, joined their friends as judges in the official taste test. In 1962 Lou Greenberg stepped in as the fourth player with Saul.
Years later, Lou confessed that he whetted the judges' appetites with schnapps, while Saul lured them with black bread, cheese and muslinas. Soon, Saul was in charge of crowd control as word spread about the feast.
The combination of herring, schnapps and golf was so successful that, after meeting with Lou, the group decided to convert their winning combination into a fundraising event for the Miriam organization. The first H&S Tournament, in 1963, raised $1,000, just the start of its long and successful history.
While herring and schnapps are still on the menu, golfers also enjoy a feast of other delicacies, libations and prizes at this first class tournament that has become a Montreal favourite and talk of the city!
