Parent Coaching - P-ESDM

The P-ESDM program is where the parent is the main actor, and the coach is present to support the parent in their interaction with their child.

What is the P-ESDM?

The P-ESDM (Parent-mediated Early Start Denver Model) is a structured, evidence-based approach that teaches parents ESDM techniques. The objective is to help parents identify and seize every learning opportunity in daily activities with their child.

This naturalistic learning program is based on the child’s interests and promotes social interaction, dyadic engagement, and verbal and non-verbal communication through spontaneous play and routines. The parent-child relationship is central to the intervention, while a coach guides and supports parents in applying appropriate strategies.

The Gold Centre is currently the only centre in Quebec proposing the P-ESDM program in accordance with the original model standards. We are also the only team in the province officially trained in the P-ESDM approach, allowing us to implement the program with fidelity and rigor.

In April 2021, thanks to the Azrieli Foundation, the Gold Centre received a grant to offer free parent coaching to families of young children (under 4 years) with developmental delays. This free program was available until March 31, 2025, and was accompanied by research conducted in partnership with UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal).

Who is it for?

The program is intended for children under the age of 5 with developmental delays, and their parents/guardians.

No diagnosis is required to access the services.

Targeted Areas

  • Communication (expressive and receptive)
  • Joint attention
  • Social skills (with adults and peers)
  • Imitation
  • Cognition
  • Play and exploration
  • Fine and gross motor skills
  • Adaptive behaviors
  • Daily living skills

Goals are defined based on evaluations, observations, and the priorities of parents/guardians.

Key Principles of the P-ESDM

  • Parents as key players: We tailor strategies to each parent’s strengths and challenges to maximize the impact of the sessions in daily life.
  • Resources adapted to family needs: We use resources such as the book *An Early Start for Your Child with Autism* and videos from the *Help is in Your Hands* program. Additional materials are also provided to facilitate the application of strategies.
  • A personalized plan: Each child benefits from a tailored program that takes into account their development and family priorities.
  • Learning through play: Sessions are designed to be engaging and fun, based on the child’s natural interests.
  • Integration into daily life: Strategies are applied in various contexts (play, routines, meals…) to foster spontaneous and natural learning.
